In April 1983, the Gil Evans Orchestra was booked into the Sweet Basil Jazz Club (Greenwich Village, New York) by jazz producer and Sweet Basil owner Horst Liepolt. In 1987, Evans recorded a live album with Sting, featuring big band arrangements of songs by and with The Police. In the same spirit of introducing new talent in his bands, he collaborated with Maria Schneider with her as an apprentice arranger on this and other final projects.

Live Sweet Basil is a live album by jazz composer, arranger, conductor and pianist Gil Evans recorded by King Records (Japan) in New York in 1984 featuring Evans with his Monday Night Orchestra which included George Adams, Howard Johnson, and Lew Soloff and originally released in the US on the Gramavision label. Gil Evans & the Monday Night Orchestra. Live at Sweet Basil Vol. 2, by Gil Evans (released 1987).

The Gil Evans Orchestra sat right there, in the apse area, with the sky as its only roof. Gil was on the left hand- side, at the electric piano, often motionless, enraptured by the music that his musicians created for him. The rest of the area reserved for the Orchestra was very small and packed with musicians and instruments. The soloists often had to step out and move to the nave to solo, right by the audience.

Recorded at Sweet Basil in NYC on December 1, 1986 (track 3) and December 22, 1986 (tracks 1, 2 & 4).
