Equal Rights is the second studio album by Peter Tosh. It was released in 1977 (see 1977 in music) on Columbia Records. The song "Get Up, Stand Up", which was co-written by Tosh, was originally a single by Tosh's previous band, The Wailers, from their 1973 album Burnin'. Downpressor Man" is a cover of a "Sinner Ma. "I Am that I Am" refers to a religious concept commonly referred to by that phrase. All songs by Peter Tosh except as shown. Side 1. "Get Up, Stand Up" – 3:29 (Tosh, Bob Marley).

Equal Rights was to be the album that propelled Peter Tosh to the top of the reggae world - the rival to onetime fellow Wailer Bob Marley. Time has shown that this lofty aspiration was not borne out, but Equal Rights remains among the handful of best, and most influential, reggae albums ever recorded. Tosh was always the most militant of the original Wailers and this album reflects that outlook

EQUAL RIGHTS was indeed a very high point for Peter and truly established him as someone who was here to stay. It's sometimes forgotten that this was just his sophomore effort as a solo artist and he nailed it big time with this one. I think this album may define who he was as both an artist and a person more than any other he recorded. You truly hear the complexities that made up the man who was, in many areas around the world, just as revered as the great Marley. As a matter of fact, I've read articles that many people in Africa and the . associated with Tosh better than Marley. I love everything about this album and love listening to it regularly. Peter Tosh was truly an artist, prophet, warrior and defender of those oppressed. He talked the talk and more importantly walked the walk. He knew what it was to be wrongly accused, beaten, and jailed for his beliefs.

In 1977 Peter Tosh released Equal Rights, a rallying cry against what he called the ‘shitstem’, his declaration of rage against the injustices he had seen all around him. It was his finest studio album, cementing his position as one of the most outspoken artists of the 70s. And although he’d suffered at the hands of the ‘shitstem’ many times before, the album notably called not for revenge but for justice. Revenge is personal, justice is political. Setting out his stall with a version of 'Get Up, Stand Up', Tosh makes it clear that equal rights will not come without a fight.
