Mellow Gold is the third studio album by American musician Beck, released on March 1, 1994 by DGC Records. Critics noted the album's hybrid of various styles including rock, hip hop, folk, blues, psychedelia, and country, as well as ironic, witty lyrics. Its decidedly anti-commercial attitude led to it becoming an unexpected commercial success, peaking at number thirteen in the United States and eventually being certified platinum

From its kaleidoscopic array of junk-culture musical styles to its assured, surrealistic wordplay, Beck's debut album, Mellow Gold, is a stunner. Throughout the record, Beck plays as if there are no divisions between musical genres, freely blending rock, rap, folk, psychedelia, and country. Although his inspired sense of humor occasionally plays like he's a smirking, irony-addled hipster, his music is never kitschy, and his wordplay is constantly inspired.

Listen to Mellow Gold right now. The single first appeared in a run of just 500 copies on 12-inch vinyl in March 1993 on Bong Load, after label owner Tom Rothrock introduced Beck to Stephenson. But it was not part of the Golden Feelings cassette that was modestly distributed by Sonic Enemy that same month. Loser’ began to garner far more modern rock radio airplay than Beck could ever have predicted. Despite Beck’s new contractual status, the album retained a resolutely lo-fi, do-it-yourself demeanour - achieved via eight-track in Beck’s living room - that was generally embraced by critics, as was the juxtaposition of skew-whiff samples and eccentric lyricism. Ultra-surreal hip-hop folk, Rolling Stone called it.

Far more than a novelty jester, Beck is a musical anarchist and bummed-out street prophet whose audience will squirm and thrill to the slacker delta blues of "Whiskeyclone" and urban nightmares like "Truckdrivin Neighbors Downstairs. Absolutely the best Beck album I know of, in my opinion. If you're new to Beck and want to experience a broad spectrum of his versatility then this album is for you. There are some haunting toe tappers on this one. If you like Beck AND have a twisted sense of humor, this album might speak to you on a much deeper level than some of his other albums have/will. Don't get me wrong, I like Beck's other albums too but this one is really dark and heartfelt from a sicko genius standpoint

This album might go a bit overboard on the silliness. But Beck still manages to bring lots of laughs from this album. 10 years later and I still enjoy this album to its fullest. He opened for the Rolling Stones (I'd easily say that he was better the TR. Anyway, he played mostly Mellow Gold stuff, and the place freaked out when he played "Loser".
