Stranger than Fiction is the eighth full-length studio album (tenth release overall) by Bad Religion, released in 1994 (see 1994 in music). Stranger Than Fiction was their first album released on the major label Atlantic Records (although that label re-released the previous album, Recipe for Hate), and also its last release with guitarist Brett Gurewitz, who left just prior to the album's 1994-1995 world tour, only to return to the band seven years later.

Following the release of the sub par album No Substance in 1998, Bad Religion went into the studio with Todd Rundgren, a long time pop/rock producer. On this fact alone, many fans of their earlier work (Against the Grain, Suffer) might not take to this albums catchy hooks and melody's straight away. After No Substance, which was said by many to be just another regurgitation of the now a tired punk genre, its not surprising that Bad Religion decided to take a new direction, which Rundgren would obviously provide. They combine tight production with a harder approach than found in this album. Thats not to say that New America doesnt shine brightly, but its certainly a different taste. The record has a more upbeat sound, which will obviously put some people off. Ultimately, fans and critics seem divided on this album.
This is the record that took Bad Religion from being a premiere punk band to becoming something far bigger. Featuring iconic cover art by Fred Hidalgo, "Recipe For Hate" retains the band's hallmark energy and rebellion exemplified by the classic "American Jesus," but the sonic palette has been slightly expanded. With "Struck A Nerve" the album featured the band's first song to be played on radio since their debut seven inch. Eddie Vedder of Pearl Jam and Johnette Napolitano of Concrete Blond contribute guest vocals
Todd Rundgren may seem like an odd choice of producer for Bad Religion, but as The New America illustrates, it was an inspired, even necessary, one for the veteran Californian punkers. Bad Religion painted themselves into a corner in the late '90s, adhering to the literate, hard-driving punk that marked their indie releases. That may have kept them pure, but as they grew older, they wound up repeating many of their musical ideas, while losing some of their focus.
