The Rolling Stones didn’t bother with a new studio album to support their Forty Licks world tour. The tiresome business of making new music has been abandoned to younger pretenders, allowing Mick and the boys time to concentrate on simply being the greatest live act in the world. This makes DVD the perfect format for them, and The Rolling Stones - Four Flicks is a benchmark in music video. Each is brilliantly shot to look and feel totally different

The Rolling Stones perform three separate concerts in New York, London and Paris in arena, stadium and club venues as part of their 2002-2003 Licks Tour in support of their 40th Anniversary and greatest hits album Forty Licks. The first DVD was one of the best ones.

The early 60s blues scene was a purists’ movement, but their second album demonstrates how eclectic and boundary-blurring the early Stones were, boldly defining a space of their own somewhere between blues, rock’n’roll and soul, amping up the pace and the attitude of each to thrilling effect. 10. Blue & Lonesome (2016). Let It Bleed boasts perhaps the most powerful opening in rock history – the four and half minutes of apocalyptic dread that constitutes Gimme Shelter – but it scarcely lets up after that: the filthy strut of Live With Me, a beautiful, mandolin-infused reading of Robert Johnson’s Love in Vain, the title track’s saga of dissipation, sex and violence.
