The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album. The Jack DeJohnette Piano Album is an album by Jack DeJohnette with Eddie Gómez and Freddie Waits recorded in 1985 and released on the Landmark label. DeJohnette on a couple of the tunes was among the very first pianists to really capture the sound of Thelonious Monk. Other selections are more in his own style and he displays a strong technique that does not sound like the work of a drummer who is moonlighting. Track List 01. Minority 8:32 02.

In DeJohnette's album notes, he acknowledges that he did not overthink the process of recording the album, saying that he wanted the flow to be natural; the title referring to a return to uncomplicated beauty. He has achieved just that". Nate Chinen of the New York Times added "it’s an album of careful contemplation and obvious personal stake. The piano goes even farther back than the drums for Mr. DeJohnette, whose style on Return is austere but sonorous, with viscosity in his touch and use of pedal sustain".

Jack DeJohnette Pianist, percussionist Great Moments in Chicago Jazz With a Pop Appeal Penned The Art of Inspiration Selected discography Sources Pointing out the far-reaching talents of Jack DeJohnette, Down Beat’s Bill Milkowski labeled the jazz musician swinging . DeJohnette was four when his mother and grandmother decided he should study piano with Antoinette Rich, the leader of an all-female symphony orchestra in Chicago. Rich was struck by the youngster ’ s perfect pitch, which she discovered when DeJohnette performed on the kazoo. Becoming proficient on the instrument at an early age, DeJohnette was only five years old when he played the kazoo on stage with T-Bone Walker at a Chicago jazz club called the Persian. The kazoo, however, remained secondary to his classical training, which was continued under his next teacher, Viola Burns.
