This album blew me away. Echoed chords and obscured melodies drift around the speakers like smoke wafting around a dimly lit room. Each piece contains a number of movements that segue into each other – as do the tracks themselves – so the album is ever-changing and constantly evolving. “Outpost 1.0” concentrates on gorgeous sun-drenched drones and chords, while “Outpost 2.0” turns somewhat unsettling with discordant tones, deep, languid dub rhythms and an indecipherable voice echoing in the distance. By the end it warms up again and gives way to “Outpost 3.0,” which carries on the vibe through a wilderness of phased and heavily echoed chords, voices and textures. Mid-way through “3.0” the piece settles on sustained tones, into which fade some drums before the piece transitions into “Outpost 4.0,” the album’s finale and by far the most psychedelic thing on it. The beginning is downright woozy and unstable, with only a steady, minimal beat anchoring the off-kilter chords. That segment dissolves at the halfway mark, replaced by drones and subtle rhythms that carry the album to its close. The album’s actual closer is reminiscent of Boards of Canada, with a strange looped spoken sample (“Our offices and studios and our microwave facilities are atop the Century Plaza Hotel”) giving way to a rising decayed melodic loop that exists for a moment before gradually fading out, until all that’s left are faint rustling, scratching sounds.Finding this album made my Friday – it gets an emphatic 5/5 and top recommendations to anyone into dub, dubtech or ambient.
