Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish rock band formed in 1979. They were the first Finnish band to chart in the UK and they were also popular in Japan. The band broke up in June 1985 after the drummer Nicholas "Razzle" Dingley died in a car accident during their first US tour in December 1984. Original vocalist Michael Monroe and guitarist Andy McCoy reunited in 2001 with a new lineup that lasted until 2009.

Oriental Beat is the second studio album by the Finnish glam punk band Hanoi Rocks, recorded in London and released in 1982. Oriental Beat also opened markets in the UK and Japan, where Hanoi eventually became very popular. Recordings for Oriental Beat (then with the working-title, Second Attempt for Suicide) started in late 1981, at the Advision-studio in London. The album was produced, recorded and mixed by Peter Wooliscroft who had worked with Frank Zappa for example

Oriental Beat finds Hanoi Rocks bringing the glam sound and look of the New York Dolls into the '80s. Oriental Beat is an album that finds itself slightly out of step with the music scene of the period - it was too late for the prime punk period of the late '70s and it was too early for the pop-metal explosion of the mid-to-late '80s. Oriental Beat is full of big singalong choruses and catchy riffs that would have made the band heavy players either five years earlier or later. Baby" and "Oriental Beat" find the band closely resembling English punk rockers the Damned. Guitarist and chief songwriter Andy McCoy does his best Johnny Thunders on "Teenangels Outsiders. Other tracks on the album show the band displaying a sound that would be emulated by many future pop-metal bands.
