Exclusively for Prime members. Sample this album Artist (Sample). Recorded in Jesus Shrist Church in Berlin with the Radio Symphony Orchestra of that great city, Chailly clocks in at 78:45. Rattle is a bit swifter at 77:22 and Morris pleasingly less hurried at 79:52. The story behind the Mahler 10th is by now well known to listeners all over the world, so I won't go into that topic.
Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Riccardo Chailly. Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin, Riccardo Chailly. 4. 3. Scherzo: Presto. Symphony No. 2 in C minor (1872 version, ed. Carragan).
For the East Berlin orchestra founded in 1923, see Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. The Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin (DSO) is a German broadcast orchestra based in Berlin. The orchestra performs its concerts principally in the Philharmonie Berlin. Between the chief conductorships of Lorin Maazel and Riccardo Chailly, the orchestra did not have a single chief conductor. The major conductors who worked with the orchestra during this period, from 1976 to 1982, were Erich Leinsdorf, Eugen Jochum, Gerd Albrecht, Gennady Rozhdestvensky and Neville Marriner. The orchestra returned to having a single chief conductor in 1982 with Riccardo Chailly. Ingo Metzmacher became principal conductor as of the 2007–2008 season, with an original initial contract until 2011.
Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra, Rundfunkchor Berlin. Stravinsky: Fireworks, Op. Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. Stravinsky: Zvezdolikiy. Puccini: Preludio Sinfonico. Puccini: Capriccio sinfonico. Chailly’s ‘symphonic’ career can be broadly described in three chapters: his first major post was with the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra (now the Deutsches Symphonie-Orchester Berlin) from 1982 to 1988. Then in 1988, he moved to the great Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam (the ensemble gained its ‘Royal’ prefix during his tenure there) where he stayed until 2004.
Riccardo Chailly’s 1985 Bruckner Symphony No. 3 presented a major challenge to Karajan’s contemporaneous recording, which pretty much ruled the roost critically. Chailly matched the elder conductor’s intensity and extreme dynamics while drawing playing of great beauty and power from the RSO Berlin. And, Decca’s clear, spacious, and wide-ranging sonics easily beat out Deutsche Grammophon’s, which (as was true for many Karajan recordings) lacked any sense of depth or space and sounded congested in tutti passages
