Rebel: Les Élémens, Simphonie Nouvelle - Rossignuols by Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel. 6. 30. Rebel: Les Élémens, Simphonie Nouvelle - Rondeau: Air pour l'amour. by Musica Antiqua Köln and Reinhard Goebel. The Les Elemens music by Rebel is fantastic - the sounds of the thunder and lightning and the elements (obviously) are brilliantly captured in period instruments, and the music remains musically interesting and beautiful. Telemann's sonata in E minor is great listening, and the Alessandro music by Gluck was not familiar to me until I got this cd, but is also wonderful listening. The three composers' music goes together well in this cd, and the Musica Antiqua Koln under Reinhard Goebel perform it empathetically and with great aplomb. Definitely recommended.

Performer: Musica Antiqua Köln/Reinhard Goebel. Gluck’s ballet Alessandro fares best, despatched with a vigour and clarity which highlights its melodic focus and suits its noble purity. The Telemann, an attractive five-movement suite à la française, is over-literal and charmless. Goebel’s response to Rebel’s Les élémens is, well, elemental: its opening seven-note chord cluster, depicting Chaos, is properly awesome, but the more conventional dance numbers move awkwardly, insensitive to the subtleties of colour which carry this music along and distinctly lacking in tendresse and le bon goût.

Reinhard Goebel and his Cologne Musica Antiqua have always revelled in this kind of extrovert gesture and from the moment of their premier coup d'archet, of which these musicians have so often proved latter-day masters, the listener is captivated by Rebel's often astonishing charivari. Alessandro or Les amours d'Alexandre et de Roxane was first performed in Vienna in 1764 but has evident French connections and affinities.
