Arctic Thunder is the 16th studio album by Norwegian band Darkthrone. It was released 14 October 2016 by Peaceville Records. It was recorded from August to December 2015 at Necrohell II Studios. The first single from the album was "Tundra Leech". The album was named after a Norwegian metal band, active from 1985 to 1989. Darkthrone received permission to use the name. Darkthrone have announced their newest studio effort, 'Arctic Thunder,' promising the record will be more 'serious and primitive than usual. Norway's coldest duo, Darkthrone, have announced their first new album in three years and 16th overall studio effort, Arctic Thunder. Serving as the successor to The Underground Resistance, it will mark a departure from the NWOBHM styled, punk leaning morbidities they've delved in for the better part of the new millennium. To give fans an indication of Darkthrone's mindset, drummer Fenriz and t and vocalist Nocturno Culto recorded and self-produced Arctic Thunder at "The Bomb Shelter," their rehearsal space between 1988 and 1990.

Arctic Thunder did come as a surprise. Even if it's scarcely different than the slower-marching black metal they did on Hate Them a decade ago, they had given every reason to believe that the Darkthrone name was now permanently dissociated from future black metal recordings. The album title is also slightly irritating, because the musical content is based on the mishmash of Darkthrone's numerous global, not only Scandinavian, Norwegian or "Arctic" influences. However, the most important thing here is exceptionally not the music. You know that I have started with a question; now I end with an urgent request.

A while after our previous ARCTIC THUNDER album it became apparent that we would continue in that same style, BLACK OLD HEAVY METAL with slow thrash, classic doom and slow death metal. As many have focussed on the 70s sound over the last 20 years, the mix on our new album has ended up being more 80s than ever. Over the course of 30 years, Norway’s Darkthrone has become a staple of the global black metal genre, forging a legacy as one of the most renowned and influential bands in its illustrious & often infamous history. In the formative years following their 1987 inception, Darkthrone initially started with a strong concoction of thrash & then death/doom metal experimentation, with broader musical influences spanning from the 60s to the 80s, before the debut album Soulside Journey was unleashed in 1991.
