Alice's Restaurant is the debut album by Arlo Guthrie released in September 1967 by Reprise Records. It features one of his most famous songs, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree". A steady seller, the album peaked at on the Billboard 200 album chart on the week of March 2, 1968. In 1996, Guthrie recorded the same material live for the album Alice's Restaurant: The Massacree Revisited. All tracks written by Arlo Guthrie. Arlo Guthrie – vocals, guitar.

Alice’s Restaurant Massacre is a musical-monologue on Arlo Guthrie’s 1967 album Alice’s Restaurant. The song is based off of a real incident and is one of Guthrie’s most famous works. In an interview on All Things Considered, Guthrie talks about why he thinks the song was so popular, Well, you know, I wasn’t sure at first, but I thought it’s probably just a story of a little guy against a big world. It’s just a funny tale, and I had–I still have–and I cherish the letters and the postcards and the pictures I got from the guys over in Vietnam, you know, who had little Alice’s Restaurant signs.

Alice's Restaurant", also known as the "Alice's Restaurant Massacree", is a satirical talking blues song by singer-songwriter Arlo Guthrie, released as the title track to his 1967 debut album Alice's Restaurant.

Album: Alice's Restaurant (1967). Charted: 97. Get the Sheet Music License This Song. Running 18 minutes and 34 seconds, this song is based on a true story that happened on Thanksgiving Day, 1965. Arlo was 18, and along with his friend Rick Robbins, drove to Stockbridge, Massachusetts to have Thanksgiving dinner with Alice and Ray Brock. Alice and Ray lived in a church - the former Trinity Church on Division Street in Stockbridge - and were used to inviting people into their home. Arlo and Rick had been traveling together, Arlo working his way up in folk singing and Rick tagging along.

Although arguably not 100 percent factual, "Alice's Restaurant Massacree" - which was recorded in front of a live audience - is rooted in a series of real incidents. This decidedly anti-establishment saga of garbage dumps closed on Thanksgiving, good ol' Officer Obie, as well as Guthrie's experiences with the draft succeeds not only because of the unusual and outlandish situations that the hero finds himself in; it is also his underdog point of view and sardonic delivery that maximize the effect in the retelling.
