Jump" is a song by American hard rock band Van Halen. It was released in December 1983 as the lead single from their album 1984. It is Van Halen's most successful single to date, reaching number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. The song differs from earlier Van Halen songs in that it is driven by a keyboard line (played on an Oberheim OB-Xa) although the song does contain a guitar solo, which was spliced together from multiple takes.
This was Van Halen's first hit, and their only with David Lee Roth as lead singer. He was classically trained on piano growing up, and didn't start playing guitar until he was a teenager. In 1991, a group called House Of Pain had a hit with a song called "Jump Around. 1984 was David Lee Roth's last album with Van Halen, and the video for "Jump" inflamed the tensions that led to his departure. The video was produced by Robert Lombard, who wanted to show the personal side of the band on stage. Roth, however, wanted the performance intercut with footage of him in various hedonistic pursuits, so they shot him doing things like riding a motorcycle and getting arrested while wearing nothing but a towel.
On this week in 1984, Van Halen’s colossal hit Jump reached on the Billboard Hot 100. Jump knocked out Culture Club’s Karma Chameleon to hold the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 for an impressive FIVE straight weeks! The song thereafter secured its place among rock music’s most popular songs, and is now considered by some to be one of the most influential and memorable rock songs of all time. On the back of its simple pared-down performance video, it helped the 1984/MCMLXXXIV album sell an astonishing eight million copies worldwide in the first ten months of 1984, alone. It’s the second song on Van Halen’s MCMLXXXIV/1984 album. 2) Parts of Jump had originally been written on the back of a tour bus, possibly as early as ’79 or ’80. However, the band had always felt the song didn’t quite fit any of the albums they’d been working on.
It was also the last Van Halen album vocalist David Lee Roth sang on until he rejoined for 2012’s A Different Kind of Truth. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen started working on 1984 in his own home studio, 5150, which he built in his backyard and named after the Los Angeles police code for an escaped mental patient. Not all of the memorable riffs on 1984 were written in 1983
