Tarantulas comprise a group of large and often hairy spiders belonging to the family Theraphosidae. There are currently about 1000 species that have been identified. Some of the more common species have become popular in the exotic pet trade.

A 'Black Widow' (Latrodectus s. is a true spider (Araneomorphae) in the family Theridiidae. A 'Tarantula' is a primitive spider (Mygalomorphae) in the family Theraphosidae.
Inspector Tellini investigates serial crimes where victims are paralyzed while having their bellies ripped open with a sharp knife, much in the same way tarantulas are killed by the black wasp. refers to the tarantula as an insect.
