Imagine is the second studio album by John Lennon after his departure from the Beatles. Recorded and released in 1971, the album's musical arrangements are more elaborate compared to the basic, small-group arrangements of his first album, John Lennon/Plastic Ono Band. Imagine is the most popular of Lennon's solo albums and the title track is considered by many to be one of Lennon's finest songs. In 2012, the album was voted 80th on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".

Lennon's solo career began with Unfinished Music No 1 - Two Virgins. The sleeve depicted him and Ono standing naked, and the cover became better known than the disjointed sound effects contained within. Three months later Lennon issued Unfinished Music No 2 - Life With The Lions. The Plastic Ono Band enjoyed radical hits with 'Give Peace A Chance', 'Cold Turkey' and 'Instant Karma'. The groundbreaking John Lennon - Plastic Ono Band, released in January 1971 was both brilliant and disturbing. The following year Sometime In New York City was issued.

Released September 9, 1971. After the primal-scream therapy of Plastic Ono Band, John Lennon softened up and opened up on his second solo album. There is still the stinging Gimme Some Truth and Lennon’s evisceration of Paul McCartney, How Do You Sleep? – both featuring George Harrison on guitar. But there is also the aching soul of John Lennon and the irresistible vulnerability of Oh Yoko! Imagine is self-consciously luminescent, pointedly embraceable, the sound of cynicism melting.
