Apartment Life is the second studio album by American band Ivy, released by Atlantic Records on October 6, 1997. After being dropped from Seed Records following the release of Realistic in 1995, the group signed to Atlantic due to connections that Adam Schlesinger had with the record label. In addition to band members Andy Chase and Schlesinger, the album was produced by Lloyd Cole and Peter Nashel

And yet it's a wonder that Ivy isn't massive. Not only are they led by a talented female singer, Dominique Durand, in an era where such a demeanor is finally favored, but she's sweet and pretty as well, with a decided French accent. Such friendliness and refined music helps explain the all-star cast willing to help Ivy out on this exquisite work, such as Lloyd Cole, James Iha, Luna's Dean Wareham, Stanley Demeski, and most of all, superb trumpet player Chris Botti. And boy does Apartment Life improve over their promising but not quite there debut, Realistic!

Apartment Life draws from a number of influences, yet it always comes across fresh and tasteful in its adaptation of styles. The opening track, "The Best Thing", chugs along with rippling atmospherics, and threatens to lull you to sleep until the punk-ish guitar attack that is clearly derived from the Pixies loud soft dynamics. Mid-album stand out "You Don't Know Anything" comes off like a My Bloody Valentine song with intelligible vocals, with a sliding, reverb heavy hook and pummeling drums

Apartment Life brims with Ivy's sophisticated songs: "The Best Thing," "I Get the Message," and "This Is the Day" all swing with a continental flair. But don't be fooled, this is not a sugar-soaked cache by any means. Durand's cynicism is front and center on "Quick, Painless, & Easy," showing the band doesn't live in a rose-tinted world. This is a great album. If you're like me, and got into Ivy with Long Distance, this will be a good addition. A bit more raw than Long Distance, but def worth the price.
