Control (Janet Jackson album). Control is the third studio album by American recording artist Janet Jackson, released on February 4, 1986, by A&M Records. Joseph Jackson, patriarch of the Jackson family of musicians, was known for managing the careers of all nine of his children; most notably, the successful career of The Jackson 5. After arranging a recording contract with A&M in 1982 for a then 16-year-old Janet, he oversaw the entire production of her debut album, Janet Jackson, and its follow-up, Dream Street (1984); the latter of which was written and produced by her brothers Marlon and Michael, and Jesse Johnson. Best known as a television actress, she was initially reluctant to begin a recording career
With Control, Janet Jackson made an album that truly reflected her as a person. Despite its title, it was the album that finally set her free. Now her and Michael were equals. Janet Jackson Essentials. Apple Music R&B/Soul. Great album, but Janet’s claims of self-determination couldn’t be more fake. Janet has a always had a man in her life calling the shots both personally and professionally. After her father, it was A&M executive John McClain, who set her up with Jimmy and Terry.
The true genius of Control lies in the marriage of her extremely self-assured vocals with the emphatic beats of R&B production wizards Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The duo was already well established in the music industry, but the practically flawless Control showcased Jam and Lewis' true studio mastery
After releasing two commercially disappointing albums, Janet Jackson returned in 1986 with her breakthrough third album, Control. While her previous releases were full of bubblegum pop, Janet’s sound was given a funky makeover courtesy of the Minneapolis sound from legendary production duo Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, along with their former bandmates Monte Moir and Jellybean Johnson from the Prince-assembled group The Time. The title track was about Janet being independent from the control of her father, Joe Jackson, who she fired as her manager going into this album. Nasty was created after she was harrassed by nasty boys on the street, and What Have You Done For Me Lately was, in part, about her annuled marriage to singer James DeBarge. Control was the genesis of Janet’s iconic status, but the album only debuted at number 102 on the Billboard 200.
Saluting the anniversary of Janet Jackson's classic career defining set. Thirty years is a long time. Especially when you’re a sex symbol for that whole stretch. Yet, Janet Jackson was my girlfriend way before February 4,1986, the date her classic third album Control, produced by Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, dropped. Well, she was my girl in my head at least.
