It debuted on Billboard 200 at number 60, with 11,000 copies sold in its first week. While it's a popular notion these days to consider a covers album a stop-gap between albums, the truth is that Smith has never been in a hurry when it comes to recording, though she has been very productive over the last decade. She has always paid tribute in one form or another to her heroes, however disparate.

Listen free to Patti Smith – Twelve (Are You Experienced?, Everybody Wants to Rule the World and more). According to her brief liner notes, Patti Smith indulged the idea of a covers album, considering songs as far back as 1978 on the back pages of Jean Genet's Thief's Journal when she was still assembling her groundbreaking early catalog; it's evident she feels that covers have been part and parcel of her recording experience from the outset.

At last summer's Lollapalooza, Patti Smith made a surprise, unscheduled appearance at, of all places, the kids' pavilion. In front of an audience composed of half parents with children and half music critics, Smith chose to rail against Israel's then-raging bombing campaign in Lebanon. Poor judgment? Perhaps. Hendrix and the Doors make appearances on Twelve, Smith's shockingly conservative 11th studio album, which comprises 12 mostly predictable covers and seems suspiciously timed to take advantage of Smith's recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (after seven straight years of being nominated). Cover albums can be more than the last refuge of the creatively bankrupt, but that takes some work and ingenuity. Yet several of these obvious songs are so iconic one wonders why Smith even bothered. Of course Smith loves "Gimme Shelter"- who doesn't?

How's the quality of the vinyl pressing, considering that it's going for such a price?
Pressed at Pallas, if I remember the hype sticker correctly. It’s a flawless pressing, much better than the CD.
  • Groll
Absolutely no problem with the sound quality. Perfect reproduction as well as excellent packaging.
