Bobby Shew – Shewhorn. Label: Pausa Records – C 7198. Format: Cassette, Album.
On this out-of-print LP from the obsolete Pausa label, the versatile Bobby Shew (who is able to play first trumpet parts as well as boppish solos) performs with a fine sextet of Los Angeles jazzmen: Gordon Brisker on tenor and flute, trombonist Bill Reichenbach, either Butch Lacy or Bill Mays on piano, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Billy Mintz. None of the originals (by Shew, Magnusson, Claudio Roditi and Bengt Hallberg) would catch on, but the advanced straight-ahead music should interest hard bop collectors.
