Best Troubador, his new 2xLP tribute to Merle Haggard, is not his first covers album. In 2013, he paid homage to the Everly Brothers with Dawn McCarthy on What the Brothers Sang, and just last year, he covered the Mekons with Angel Olsen on Fantastic Voyage. Of the three artists, Haggard seems like the best fit for present day Bonnie Prince Billy : a singular force who found a way to age gracefully by following his own path-refusing to be pinned down even as he slows down

Complete your Bonnie Prince Billy collection. Here Bonnie is a bit lost. I don't know what this album is trying to be. The versions you got here are not that interesting. Bonnie could have atleast done something different than the usual acoustic repertoire. I would have liked an electronic new-age cosmic Merle Haggard as no one probably has ever done that. Will Oldham is a superior songwriter and vocalist when he wants to be, but there's just enough of a willful persona to his work as Bonnie "Prince" Billy and within the Palace rubric that it's hard to tell when he's being serious and when he's pulling his audience's collective leg, even when his work is good. One of the things that makes Best Troubador something truly special is that, more than nearly all of Oldham's work to date, he's playing straight throughout, and for a good reason.

Bonnie "Prince" Billy (. Will Oldham) has recorded a tribute album to Merle Haggard. Jessica Fey/Courtesy of Drag City. Imagine arranging Merle Haggard’s millions of fans in concentric circles. The idea to record Best Troubador came together roughly 18 months ago. (It’s not Oldham’s first tribute record – in 2013, he recorded an album of Everly Brothers covers with Dawn McCarthy. Oldham put together a list of Haggard songs for his band to perform live, and they played their first all-Haggard show in December 2015. Then in April 2016, Haggard died.

Now streaming via NPR, the album sees Oldham, under his trusty Bonnie 'Prince' Billy moniker, taking a whistle-stop tour through Haggard's back catalog with tenderness and care for the work of one of his most-cited influences.
