Violinist James Ehnes unites with the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under the direction of Bramwell Tovey for this noteworthy collection of concertos by Korngold, Barber, and Walton. Ehnes' sound seems to be especially well suited for these three works, each demanding rich, fluid tone; stellar technique; and exceptional sensitivity and musicality.

You see, at the moment I am listening to James Ehnes, Bramwell Tovey and the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra performing Violin concertos from Korngold, Barber and Walton. I am at a profound loss as to what exactly I can say about this work, what criticism I can actually find. The truth remains, I really can’t. James Ehnes is the solo violinist in the performance, the main guy. He is an exceptionally talented musician and handles the pieces gracefully and with passion, exactly what you want from a violinist. 35, Barber’s Violin Concerto Op. 14, and Walton’s Violin Concerto. The pieces are from the early 20th century and the modernity is recognizable in the amount of dissonance and at times ambience in the pieces. This is particularly evident with Samuel Barber’s concerto.
Performer: James Ehnes (violin); Vancouver SO/Bramwell Tovey. But among modern recordings the obvious comparison is with Joshua Bell, who couples the Barber and the Walton with Bloch’s Baal Shem.

Violin Concerto, Op. 14 - James Ehnes/Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. Violin Concerto - James Ehnes/Vancouver Symphony Orchestra. More corn than gold, was the cruel put-down of the American critic Irving Kolodin after hearing the première of the opulent Violin Concerto by Erich Wolfgang Korngold (1897-1957), played by Heifetz. Korngold was 50 and his life had already mirrored some of the major political and social upheavals of the 20th century. This is one of Walton's most richly inspired works, and Ehnes brings that out strongly, helped by the powerful playing of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra under its music director Bramwell Tovey. Textures are not always as transparent as they might be, but the power of the orchestral playing in all three works adds greatly to the impact of the performances.
In 2003 Bramwell Tovey won the Juno Award for Best Classical Composition for his choral and brass work Requiem for a Charred Skull. His song cycle, Ancestral Voices, which addresses the issue of Reconciliation, was written for acclaimed Kwagiulth mezzo-soprano Marion Newman and premiered in June 2017. His concerto for Orchestra will receive its world premiere in April to commemorate the VSO’s Centenary, and a new violin concerto for James Ehnes has been commissioned by the National Arts Centre Orchestra, Ottawa and will receive its premiere at the NAC in March. Mr. Tovey was the recipient of the Oskar Morawetz 2015 Prize for Excellence in Music Performance. He was previously Music Director of Orchestre Philharmonique du Luxembourg where he led the world premiere of Penderecki’s Eighth Symphony on the opening of the principality’s new concert hall, the Philharmonie.
