Laszlo Halasz (6 June 1905 in Debrecen, Hungary – 26 October 2001 in Port Washington, New York) was an opera director, conductor, and pianist. In 1943 he was appointed the first director of the New York City Opera; a position he held until 1951. He later served on music faculties of the Peabody Conservatory of Music and the Eastman School of Music as part of their conducting and opera departments. When Toscanini moved to New York, in 1936, he invited Mr. Halasz to become his assistant at the NBC Symphony. He was appointed chorus master of the St. Louis Opera Company, and became conductor debut there in 1937, leading Wagner's ''Tristan und Isolde'' in a last-minute substitution for the conductor Leo Blech.
Aida (Italian: ) is an opera in four acts by Giuseppe Verdi to an Italian libretto by Antonio Ghislanzoni. Set in the Old Kingdom of Egypt, it was commissioned by Cairo's Khedivial Opera House and had its première there on 24 December 1871, in a performance conducted by Giovanni Bottesini.
He has sung All-Verdi concerts with Dayton Opera, Sarasota Opera, Opera Birmingham, and the New Haven Symphony Orchestra, and a gala concert with Opéra de Montréal. Equally adept in musical theater repertoire, he starred as Nick Valenti in the first national tour of Bullets Over Broadway. Hailed by the New York Times as rich voiced and by Opera News as impressive for his 2016 portrayal of Scarpia in Tosca, baritone, Gustavo Feulien (Silvio) has appeared as the Count in Le nozze di Figaro and Belcore in Elisir d’amore at Theater Bremen; as Silvio in I Pagliacci and Robert in Iolanta at Dicapo Opera Theatre; as Escamillo. Born into a family with a long operatic history (his father, Claudio, was the artistic director of many Italian theatres; Franco Pugliese, his grandfather, was a well-known bass) Lev Pugliese’s appreciation for opera developed at a very young age.
